Has Labour come up with the best way to frighten the Labour core vote to the polls in cities? By confronting the BNP many ethnic minorities will feel compelled to support Labour for fear of the BNP getting a hold and being deported at some time in the future. I think this was a deliberate strategy by the Labour Party and BBC to help Labour get a core vote out to prevent Labour party annihilation. It is rather like President Mugabe's tactics in Zimbabwe - Labour have failed on the Economy so look for a diversion. He goes for the white farmers.
In this country Labour go for the BNP to get wavering voters to back Labour. Sure there will be some White Working Class folk who will now be more inclined to vote BNP but the likelihood will be that there voting patterns are too scattered to hurt Labour especially if enough normally Labour supporting people hold there nose and vote Labour to prevent BNP gains.
This interesting BNP issue comes after Labour Cabinet Ministers have been deployed to visit places rather like they would in an election campaign. In this case Labour are going round there Northern bastions as in the last week. I have seen much activity in the TV media and it gets reported in the press a couple of days later:
Gordon Brown visits Wakefield:

Brown also visited Leeds.

Blunkett took Alan Johnson to meet some group in Sheffield on Friday 23rd October 2009.
Alan Johnson also said in a BBC Look North Sound bite that he would be visiting Merseyside, the Northeast and some places in the south. Sounds like electioneering to me for a GE!
Hillary Benn also got some footage on Local TV News group meeting some group of hard done by folks.
Now given the Economy is still in recession and likely to get worse as Oil Prices rise, in addition VAT goes up in January, the C of E borrowing figures/growth figures will look even more silly given estimations on growth and so a PBS looks like the gateway to a Gilt Strike and Close encounter of the IMF kind due to lack of investor confidence. One has to wonder if Brown is going to call an election the Moment President Klaus signs the Lisbon treaty this week? It would preempt a PBS and the Glasgow by-election and also confirm why Brown looks to be electioneering (pre-firing gun and the visit to the palace) in Yorkshire and not going anywhere near the Glasgow by-election! Seems a strange use of time and prioities! Indeed a 17 day campaign triggered next week would explain this.
